Deep Community Roots and Ties to Education

  • Cheryl was the fifth generation of her family to graduate from schools in the Pickerington area. She was Salutatorian during a period when the school had shifted to split sessions due to the rapid growth in the district.

  • Cheryl raised two amazing children who graduated from PLSD. Both were active in multiple activities including Cross Country, Track, Band, and Honor Society. She loved being an actively engaged volunteer whether she was needed as a timer, an announcer at home track meets, a chaperone for band trips, or making sure the boys cross country team had ample water on their 6 to 13 mile Sunday runs.

  • Recognized as an Outstanding Alumnus and an Athena Leadership Award recipient, she currently pays forward to the community through Board roles on the Pickerington Education Foundation, the Pickerington Food Pantry and the Fairfield County Agricultural Society. She has also served as Trustee for the Pickerington Library.

Ties to Educational Excellence

  • Cheryl was responsible for employee development for a 4,500 employee organization so she understands the importance of exceptional K - 12 education.

  • Cheryl’s father and one of her Grandmother were teachers. Two sisters have an education degree and have been teachers. Cheryl’s daughter and son-in-law have a combined 29 years of teaching experience at Madison Comprehensive High School. Her daughter is currently head of the History department, is a coach for two sports, and is active in the union.

  • Cheryl was recognized by The Ohio State University with a Meritorious Service to Students Award and an Outstanding Young Professional Award.

  • She has served in local, regional, and national volunteer leadership positions for the American Society of Training and Development (now ATD), serving as Chair of the National Consultants’ Network, Co-Chair of the International Award Committee, and Chair of the Council of Regions and Chapters.

Opportunity that expanded her perspective

Cheryl says one of her most rewarding coaching experiences was when a young woman who was in addiction recovery came to live with her for twenty-two months. The woman’s goal was to be in a more stable environment while creating a healthier life. During their time together, they focused on developing key life skills (financial, focus, commitment to goals), creating more discipline, and expanding her vision of what was possible for her life.

Cheryl’s guest became like an adopted daughter. And she expanded Cheryl’s world by sharing what she experienced in Hotel Rwanda during the country’s terrible civil war, describing the challenges of transitioning to life in the United States, and increasing Cheryl’s awareness of the mental and emotional challenges faced by those in recovery.
